Koln

Trying to avoid the highways in Germany keeps proving to be a difficulty for us. We rely on the guidance of our GPS unit and ask it to avoid highways. The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg never once put us on the highway. So we once again had to navigate the old fashioned way (using the map on the computer). The road we took into Cologne provided us with a spectacular view of their industrial area. With Julie already feeling sick, she didn’t care to see the rest of the city after that drive. In her defense the area we saw looked worse than Hamilton and was much larger. We rested again in the van at another stellplatz with the full intention of viewing Colognes massive cathedral and city center. Cold rain and Julie’s sickness sidelined us for another day. The only highlight for us was seeing an identical Blue LT28 in the same car park. We left Cologne without seeing any of the sights. We both left this town miserable, me because we didn’t stay to see anything and Julie because of the schedule we needed to keep.

Wouldn't stress too much about it, terrible to see a city when you're sick and not up to it, and well.... there's lots more cities to see anyways!

You didn't miss much. The city isn't impressive at all in comparrision to other cities in Germany you will be going to. I liked the cathedral although only from a architectural view of the size. There are many more cathedrals and churches to see. If you stop off in Regensburg be sure to check out the Cathedral there!!!

Hey Kris, Finally got on here to check out your blog - looks like camping is making for a bit of difficult maneuvering, but you seem to have a system figured out! No handy Crown Lands to camp on for free in Europe sadly...no space and they're all about laws and following the rules - especially in the more northern countries in Europe. Spain should prove to be way more flexible. Just make sure you don't taint your experiences by worrying too much about money.

Oh, and as for Koeln - seems you were driving right through the infamous "Ruhrgebiet". It is probably the largest coal mining and industry area in Germany, not likely a pretty sight.

Can I suggest the following cities in Germany?:

Dresden, Hamburg, Berlin - but give yourself a few days for that, sooo much history, Rhein area is a must see and drive through...lots of medieval castles, beautiful scenery, vineyards etc, Luebeck is also nice, Mad King Ludwig's castle in Bavaria and the Wieschurch near there, Bamberg (UNESCO heritage city), Rothenburg ob der Tauber - phenomenal medieval city, a must see for a day, Lindau on the Bodensee(Lake Constance) is nice for a day's visit, Munich is alright for shopping and history, some great museums. Personally while I was backpacking, I found taking the backroads is ideal to get a sense of the countryside and how people live - also, in the North near Bremen, Hamburg & Luebeck drive through the countryside to see the cute traditional homes unique to that region. If you have any questions while in Germany just let me know - my family is from there and i've been there many times.
